WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for two individuals who have experienced depression at some point in their life and who are willing be part of the Trial Steering Committee (TSC) for the REFRAMED study. Ideally the persons will be living in or near Southampton, where the core REFRAMED team is based. Previous experience of advising research studies or Trial Steering Committees would be advantageous, but is not required. We do not expect you to represent the entire depression community, but simply to advise the committee on how you would experience being part of the study.
WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED FROM YOU?
The Trial Steering Committee provides overall supervision for a trial and ensures that the trial is conducted to the rigorous standards set out in the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice. In particular, the TSC concentrates on progress of the trial, adherence to the protocol, patient safety and the consideration of new information of relevance to the research question.
As a service user you will be asked to attend 5-6 meetings over the course of 5 years, starting in October 2011 and ending in August 2016. We will ask you to review our trial protocol and to advise us on ways to improve aspects of the trial such as safety, recruitment, or dissemination of our results. So, you will have the opportunity to use your personal experience to guide decision making for this trial.
Where possible we will arrange for these meetings to take place in-person, but conference calls will also be possible. We will ask two service users to take part in the TSC, so that you will not be alone when advising the committee.

ABOUT THE REFRAMED STUDY
REFRAMED is a 5 year project that aims to investigate REFRActory depression - Mechanisms and Efficacy of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. DBT is a type of talking therapy that will be offered in addition to the treatment that patients are already receiving, such as antidepressant medication. Some participants will only receive treatment as usual (TAU), while others will receive both TAU and DBT. Who will be in which group will be decided at random. A total of 276 patients will be included across Dorset, Hampshire, and North Wales. We will assess their depression levels (amongst other things) before and after treatment, and 6 and 12 months after the end of treatment. In between these moments we will ask participants to complete online questionnaires on a monthly basis (during the first year). The preparatory phase of this project has started, and we hope to start recruitment of the first participants in March of next year.
