Full description:

Background: Gum disease (periodontitis) is a very common, chronic inflammation affecting the gums and the jawbone (gum pockets). When periodontitis is not treated, it may cause tooth loss affecting speech, nutrition and wellbeing. Following periodontitis treatment in a specialist centre, patients are followed up at NHS primary care regularly over lifetime as part of a “supportive periodontal care” (SPC) plan provided by the general dental practitioner (GDP) and dental team.

We are looking for public/patients affected by periodontal and peri-implant diseases (gum, jawbone and implant diseases). In particular, our aim is to collect their thoughts about the type of periodontal and oral care they receive in primary care with their general dentist.

Ideally would be good to involve people that underwent gum disease treatment and were referred to their dentist for regular care. The people will help designing the protocol, contribute to study meetings and involve in the dissemination of the results. People will be involved for the full duration of the study (approximate 18months). People involvement will start from early stage of the study. Public, patients, service users along with dental team and general dental practitioners will be involved in
the project. There will be payment for their participation.
